There is a thrill that comes with making a wedding
cake…………more, more and more! Excitement, timing, planning, shopping, baking,
decorating and delivery.
We got this special order from one of our client whose son’s
traditional wedding is taking place in Warri, Delta State, which is about 215
Kilometers from Port Harcourt where our bakery is located. She made this
arrangement a month to the wedding and she is going to be travelling down with
this wonderful cake.
The design of this cake is spectacular, a trunk box that
gives the illusion of jewelry, beads & wrapper spilling out. Amongst the
various tribes in Nigeria this box is not just a symbol, but a necessity. It is
usually filled up with utilitarian things as requested by the bride’s family
and its contents vary from one tribe to another. Since we’ve been given the
honor of making this gorgeous traditional cake, we’d love to share this
experience with you.
1. We
started by soaking the mixed fruits in Rum and Lemon rind for about a month
(note that she requested for a fruit cake).
2. The
next step after the soaked fruits have fully matured is to mix the ingredients
and cake the fruit cake (note that we’re baking 4 rectangular cakes).
3. As
soon as they’re out of the oven, we pour Rum & Brandy on the baked cakes,
allow them to cool and then wrap in foil paper.
4. Stack
3 of these cakes to form the trunk, while leaving the last one to serve as the
trunk box cover, trim or carve the stacked cakes to your desired shape as shown
below.
5. Next
we spread butter cream all around our cake (butter cream has several uses in
this case it is used to stick the fondant to the cake).
6. Cover
with fondant and trim off the rough edges.
7. Make,
create or design the coral beads and the wrapper pieces with fondant, and then
place these coral beads & wrapper in strategic areas to create the effect
that you want.
8. Now
we go back to the 4th rectangular cake which will act as the trunk
box cover, and wrap it all up with butter cream & fondant just like we did
with the 3 stacked cakes, then we gently place this cake on top of the other
ones.
9.
We now proceed to paint the cake board/base with
edible silver dust …do you notice the reflection of light coming off the cake
board?
10.
Put finishing touches by adding more ornaments
and painting them to further enhance the beauty of the cake.
11.
Picture time.
12.
Packaging and getting my gorgeous cake ready for
the trip………………… safe trip.
So there it is, you now have the lovely
illusion of a trunk box with jewelry, beads & wrapper spilling over.
